Large Language Models in Process Safety (1 of 5)

Large Language Models (LLMs) have advanced with remarkable speed and are now being applied in many industrial settings. In the process and energy industries, where complex technologies, hazardous materials, and human decision-making intersect, LLMs offer both opportunities and risks. They can analyze large volumes of information, generate draft documents, identify patterns, and support training. However, their output is probabilistic, not authoritative. In process safety, accuracy and reliability are essential — the consequences of a wrong or misleading answer can be severe.

This series examines how LLMs can be used — carefully and with appropriate safeguards — within the 20 elements of the CCPS Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) framework. The purpose is not to promote automation for its own sake, nor to suggest that LLMs can replace human judgment. Rather, the goal is to describe how LLMs may augment human, organizational, and technical systems when used under disciplined management, strong verification practices, and a robust process safety culture.

In this paid post, we discuss the second four elements: Safe Work Practices, Asset Integrity / Reliability, Contractor Management, and Training / Performance.
